Abuse scandal: Nassar sentenced to another 40 to 125 years in prison

Charlotte (SID) In the third and final trial in the wake of the sexual abuse scandal in US artistic gymnastics, former team doctor Larry Nassar received an additional prison sentence of 40 to 125 years. In December, Nassar was sentenced to 60 years in prison for possession of child pornographic material, and at the end of January he was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison for sexual abuse. “This concludes the criminal case against Larry Nassar and I know it does not put an end to the physical and emotional suffering he has caused,” Judge Janice Cunningham said Monday in Charlotte, Michigan. Nassar is said to have sexually abused at least 265 girls and women over almost three decades as a doctor for US gymnasts. His victims included Olympic gold medalists Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Wieber and McKayla Maroney. Before the judge's verdict, Nassar apologized to his victims. "It's impossible to convey how sorry I am to everyone involved," he said. The statements of those affected hit Nassar “at his very core” and would “remain in my thoughts forever.” However, Judge Cunningham replied: "I am not convinced that you truly understand what you did wrong and the devastating impact you had on the victims and their families and friends."
