Abuse scandal: US gymnastics star Raisman sues association and USOC

Lansing (SID) Three-time Olympic champion Aly Raisman (23) has sued the USA Gymnastics Association and the US Olympic Committee (USOC) over the sexual abuse scandal in artistic gymnastics. Raisman announced this in a statement that was available to numerous US media outlets. "My top priority was to inspire change so that future generations would be safer," said Raisman, "but it became painfully clear to me that these organizations have no interest in adequately addressing this problem." Long-time US team doctor Larry Nassar, who is said to have sexually abused at least 265 girls and women over almost three decades, received a third long prison sentence a month ago in the final trial in the wake of the scandal. The 54-year-old will never leave prison again. Raisman called for an independent investigation into the case in January. But not enough has happened since then. “I am no longer waiting for these institutions to do the right thing. I hope that the lawsuits will hold them accountable,” said Raisman. The USOC knew about Nassar's crimes right up to the top. The board of directors of the US Gymnastics Association and the team leader responsible for the artistic gymnasts, Valeri Liukin, recently resigned.
