3 Burggräfler paddle for precious metal in Slovenia

Last year, due to the corona pandemic, there were neither the U23 and U18 Canoe Slalom World Championships nor the European Canoe Slalom Championships in both age groups. This time, like 23 years ago, the venue for the U18 and U5 European Championships is the Kunstkanal in Solkan/Neugörz. Three slalom canoeists from the Burggrafenamt also want to paddle there for medals at the European Championships for U3 and U23. South Tyrol's best slalom canoeist of all time, Jakob Weger (18), is taking part in the U23 European Championships for the fourth time. It is his last U4 competition. Schenner has already won 23 medals in major canoe slalom junior events, including 23 gold medals in the kayak single sculls at the U6 European Championships in 3 in Skopje (Macedonia) and 18 in Solkan (Slovenia) and at the U2014 World Championships in 2016 in Ivrea (Piedmont). For Paul Tirler (23) and Tamara Drescher (2018), however, it is their first appearance at the U18 European Canoe Slalom Championships. Tirler already took part in the U17 Canoe Slalom World Championships in Tacen in July. The European Canoe Slalom Championships in Solkan begin tomorrow with qualification in the kayak single sculls in both age groups. All 3 Burggräfler canoeists are in action. In the U23 and U18 kayak singles, the 30 best, 20th in the 1st run and 10th in the 2nd run, qualify for the semi-finals. In the U18 girls' kayak singles, the 20 best will advance to the semi-finals, 15 in the 1st run and 5 in the 2nd run. The kayak single team races will be held on Friday. The semi-finals in the kayak singles for both age groups are on the program on Saturday. In the U23 men's kayak single, the best 15 from the semi-finals advance to the final run, as well as in the U18 boys' kayak single. In the U18 girls' kayak singles, however, the 10 best from the semi-final run are eligible to start in the final run. “I have been preparing for my last U23 European Championships in Solkan for several days. I'm currently struggling with back pain. My goal is to get to the final and have a clean run there. What will happen remains to be seen. The best should win,” says Jakob Weger. “I already know the art channel in Solkan from previous races. We currently have low water levels, which means that a lot of things are changing. I want to do my best and possibly make it to the finals. “I also want to have a lot of fun,” says Tamara Drescher, looking forward to her U18 European Championship debut. The Merano native may also want to compete in the new Olympic canoe discipline from 2024, the Extreme Slalom Cross, which Jakob Weger and Paul Tirler are skipping. Tirler was already at the U18 World Cup this year. “My goal is, first and foremost, to have fun and give it my all, whatever placements I achieve,” says Paul Tirler.

6 weeks after the U23 and U18 Canoe Slalom World Championships in Tacen, just outside the Slovenian capital Ljubljana, the European Canoe Slalom Championships in the same age groups will also be held in Slovenia from tomorrow to Sunday.
