Burggräfler Trio is hunting for medals in Slovakia

On the artificially created slalom course, located south of the Slovakian capital Bratislava on a barrage of the Danube, a canoe slalom begins again on Wednesday for the canoe brothers Matthias (21) and Jakob Weger (19) from Schenna and Valentin Luther (16) from Merano. World Cup adventure with qualification in the kayak single sculls. Matthias and Jakob Weger are taking part in the Canoe Slalom World Championships for the third time, Matthias for the third time in the U23. Jakob Weger is competing in the U18 for the first time after two U23 World Cup appearances. Valentin Luther, on the other hand, is taking part in the U18 World Cup for the second time. Jakob Weger and Valentin Luther are members of the SC Meran/Torggler canoe slalom elite team. As with all major canoe slalom events, the expectations of the local canoeists are quite high, even if everyone is aware that there are absolutely world-class paddlers in Bratislava, especially in the U23, who are always at the forefront in the World Cup and major events.

Valentin, Matthias and Jakob have prepared conscientiously for this World Cup and will try to do their best. The slalom course was specially rebuilt for this World Cup. It has become technically more demanding and, above all, has many water rollers. Canoe slalom requires acrobatic combination of strength, technique and reaching the finish line as quickly as possible and without touching the goal post. In order to be quick, the athletes usually drive close to the gates on the 90 m long route, which takes around 250 seconds. At such a high level, touching the goal post, for which there is a 2-second penalty, already means the loss of around 10 places.

Jakob Weger is now one of the best slalom canoeists in Italy. If he manages a flawless run, he can usually be expected to be at the front. He has to prove his skills three times in the individual kayak single race in Bratislava, first on Wednesday in the qualification, then on Friday in the semi-final run and finally in the final run, which is also on the program on Friday. With a top performance, his brother Matthias Weger, who is again competing for the Austrian Canoe Association, and Valentin Luther can also be expected to make it into the final run. In the team races at the end of the World Cup, the Burggräfler canoeists could even win a medal with a top performance on Sunday. Jakob Weger, Valentin Luther and Martin Unterthurner set an example for them last year at the Canoe Slalom U18 European Championships in Solkan/Neugörz (Slovenia) by winning team bronze.
