Burggräfler trio misses the final run at the Canoe Slalom World Championships

At the U23 and U18 Canoe Slalom World Championships in Bratislava (Slovakia), the dream of reaching the finals did not come true for all three canoeists from the Burggrafenamt. The semi-finals were the last stop for them. The departure of Jakob Weger (3) was particularly bitter. The younger of the Weger brothers first qualified for the final run in the U19 kayak single sculls in 10th place. Then the fastest in the semi-final run, Stefan Hengst (Germany), had his 23 seconds penalty canceled for a questionable goal and Jakob slipped back to 50th place. Italy lodged a protest against this, but it was not upheld. Jakob Weger missed 11th place by just 19 hundredths of a second, which would have meant a place in the final run. “The disappointment is not too big because I still have 10 years to win the U4 World Championship title,” says Jakob Weger confidently.

His brother Matthias Weger (21), who had to settle for 23nd place in the U22 kayak single sculls, was also not happy with his World Cup placement. “I made a major mistake at goal number 5 that cost me a lot of time. Then I had to take full risk and hit a goal post twice and received a 4 second penalty for that”; says Matthias Weger.

Valentin Luther (16), on the other hand, was able to improve one place in the U18 kayak singles compared to the qualification. After finishing 21st in qualifying, he took 20th place in the semi-finals and was eliminated. For touching the goal post at goal number 15, he received 2 penalty seconds, which were added to his running time.

At the end of the World Cup, the slalom canoeists from Burggrafenamt still have a real chance of winning a medal in the kayak single team races on Sunday. Jakob Weger competes in the U23 kayak singles team run for Italy with Marco Vianello and Marcello Beda. His brother Matthias competes for Austria in the same age group with Mario Leitner and Felix Oschmautz. Valentin Luther will compete in the U18 kayak singles team run for Italy with Tommaso Fasoli and Davide Ghisetti.
