The Weger brothers are hunting for medals in Brazil

Last year, Matthias (19) and Jakob Weger (16) took part in the canoe slalom European Championships in Skopje (Macedonia) in the kayak single sculls in the same age group (U18) and for the same national team. At the Canoe Slalom World Championships in Foz do Iguazú near the world-famous Iguazú Waterfalls in southeastern Brazil, the two successful canoe brothers from Schenna are competing in the kayak singles not only in two different age groups, but also for two different countries: Matthias in the U23 age group for Austria and Jakob in the U18 for Italy.

The qualifying runs in both age groups are scheduled for Wednesday. The best 40 each make it to the semi-finals. On Friday, the 40 young canoeists will paddle in the semi-finals for the ten starting places in the final race, which will take place in both age groups on Saturday. On Saturday, Matthias and Jakob Weger will also be competing in the one-person kayak team run, where they will both compete against each other with a chance of winning a medal.

Matthias Weger changed associations after the end of the season. “In Austria, young canoeists are supported much more than in Italy. That's why I decided to switch to the Austrian Canoe Association. In order to be able to paddle in the Austrian national team, I only needed a place of residence in Austria. I will be studying in Innsbruck in the fall, so living in Austria wasn’t a big problem,” explains Matthias Weger.

His younger brother Jakob sensationally became the U18 canoe slalom European champion in Skopje (Macedonia) last year in the kayak single sculls. The younger of the Weger brothers is also one of the medal contenders at the U18 World Championships in Brazil. At the season-opening race in Solkan/Slovenia, Jakob showed himself in impressive early form and thus announced that he will also be a force to be reckoned with at the World Championships in Brazil.

With normal form, Jakob should easily be able to reach the final run of the top ten kayak paddlers. However, it will be more difficult for Matthias to make it to the finals in the U23. The competition is very great. “My minimum goal is the semi-finals. I will do my best. If everything goes according to plan, a place in the final run is possible for me too,” believes Matthias Weger.
