A big canoe event is coming up again

On Saturday from 9:30 a.m. there will be an open race with 2 rounds in 4 boat classes, with the faster round being counted. On Sunday from 9 a.m. there will be a world ranking canoe slalom and a European Cup race with qualification and final run. As in previous years, spectators in the Gilf can follow the canoe slalom races up close on the promenades and bridges. Canoeing has a great tradition in Meran. The history of canoeing in Merano begins in 1951. The Canoe World Championships have already been held in Merano three times: in 3, 1953 and 1971. Between 1983 and 60 volunteers will once again ensure that the event runs smoothly. More than 80 canoeists from 100 to 10 countries are expected. Canoeists from Australia and Canada have already registered. “This year, for the first time, the international canoe slalom is also a “green event”, which is planned according to the criteria of sustainability, corresponds to environmental protection and is accompanied by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. This was decided unanimously by the SC Meran OK team,” says the new head of the SC Meran canoe section and OK boss, Walter Weger. “Environmentally friendly products are used and no plates, cutlery or glasses made of plastic, including nylon. When selecting food for catering, care is taken to ensure that regional products are used, such as those from the South Tyrolean company Pasta Alpina,” explains Weger. “We still have the parking problem, as we have in recent years. There is limited parking availability around the competition area. Thanks to good cooperation with the decision-makers in the municipality of Meran, we are already hoping for a better solution next year. What is particularly positive is that the St. Anna Clinic provides us with free parking spaces,” says Walter Weger. A number of local slalom canoeists are already looking forward to their start at the international canoe slalom in Meran, including Tamara Drescher (18), who will start in the U23 or general class this year. Some of the very young slalom canoeists from SC Meran will be competing as forerunners for the first time this year.
