Successful debut for the canoe veterans of SC Meran

There was a successful premiere for the canoe veterans of SC Meran on Saturday in Ivrea (Piedmont). For the first time they competed at a European Masters Championships in the canoe slalom in the Dora Baltea Canal. Right away, Georg Hager, Hansjörg Mayr and Markus Hager won gold, silver and bronze in their categories in the K1 individual and silver in the K1 team run for 40-44 year olds.

Georg Hager, was able to have the gold medal hanging around his neck in Ivrea in the 70 to 74 year old category. The oldest slalom canoeist from Meran won clearly in 119,32 seconds ahead of the German Bernd Wellenhausen (133,33). Hansjörg Mayr, on the other hand, won the silver medal in the 60 to 64 year olds. In 92,78 seconds he only had to bow to the former world-class canoeist Peter Micheler from Germany (88,00). His compatriot Sven Rottenberger came third (95,38). In the 40 to 44 year old category, Markus Hager, Georg Hager's son, secured the bronze medal in 96,44 seconds behind Anton King (Australia/87,77) and Alexej Podobryaew (Russia/95,38). In the K1 team run for 40-44 year olds, Georg Hager, Hansjörg Mayr and Markus Hager paddled to the silver medal in 119,07 seconds behind Great Britain (104,61). Bronze went to Switzerland (131,05). “It was a difficult channel, a great race, strong competition, especially the Germans and French,” said Markus Hager.
