In Merano everything is ready for the big canoe event

“This is a significant increase in the number of participants at our event and is proof that we have worked well in recent years,” says OC boss Walter Weger. For canoeists from all over the world, the international canoe slalom in Merano is something special every year, as, unlike most canoe slalom competitions, it is held in a natural stream in a unique setting. Almost all canoe slalom races now take place in artificial canals.

Like last year, a “World Ranking Competition” will be held on Saturday, where only canoeists who belong to a national team can start. 85 canoeists from twelve countries are registered in five boat classes, including Lukas Mayr and Jakob Weger from SC Meran for the Italian national team and Matthias Weger (SC Meran) for the Austrian national team in the kayak single sculls. From 9 a.m. there will be two qualifying runs on a course with 18 to 20 gates, six of them upwards, from the Gilfklamm to Steinernen Stegen.

The water level on the Passer is currently almost ideal for the race. In the supreme discipline, men's kayaking, the 40 best qualify for the semi-final run, which is scheduled after the qualifying runs. The ten best in the semi-final race then paddle for victory and the podium places in the final race. Three canoeists from Australia and one canoeist from Morocco also registered for the “World Ranking Competition”. The most prominent participants are the Austrian canoeing couple, Helmut and Violetta Peters-Oblinger. Helmut Peters-Oblinger has already taken part in the Olympic Games five times. His wife won the bronze medal in the women's kayak single sculls in the Olympic canoe slalom in Athens in 2008.

In addition to the World Ranking Canoe Slalom, there will also be an open race on Saturday, which also applies to all other participants who are not part of a national team.

On Sunday the 60th edition of the international canoe slalom on the Passer The 60th edition of the international canoe slalom in Meran will be held on Sunday from 9 a.m. in two rounds on the Passer. Not only Lukas Mayr, Matthias and Jakob Weger from SC Meran will show their skills at the home races, but also all the other young canoeists from SC Meran: Markus Hübner, Michael Luther, Lenz Luther, Valentin Luther, Martin Unterthurner, Franziska Thaler and Peter Mulser. Manuel Ulpmer from SV Milland will also start in Meran.

At the international canoe slalom in Meran, the second qualification for the U18 European Championships in the canoe slalom will also take place in Krakow (Poland) at the end of August. At the first European Championship qualification in Slovenia, Jakob Weger and Michael Luther from SC Meran took first and third place in the kayak sculls.

Saturday June 6th 9:00 a.m.: Start of the “World Ranking” canoe slalom in five boat classes in the Gilf of Merano with the qualifying runs then semi-finals and finals in all boat classes 19.30 p.m.: Award ceremony at the SC Meran boathouse area

Sunday June 7th 9:00 a.m.: First round of the 60th International Canoe Slalom in five boat classes in the senior (general class) and junior (U18) age groups. then second round 16:00 p.m.: Award ceremony at the SC Meran boathouse area.
