Canoe Slalom European Championships: All three Burggräfler canoeists in the semi-finals

The European Canoe Slalom Championships in the U23 and U18 categories in Hohenlimburg (Germany) got off to a very good start for the local canoeists. Matthias Weger (U23) and Valentin Luther (U18) made it into the semi-finals in twelfth place in the first qualifying run. This, as well as the final run of the best 15 kayak paddlers, is on the program on Saturday.

Matthias Weger managed a clean run without any penalty seconds. “It was mentally very difficult for me to prepare for the competition with the injury I sustained to my upper arm while skateboarding, as I was also in pain. Nevertheless, I managed a clean run in the first qualifying with a small mistake that cost me some time,” said the 21-year-old canoeist from Schenna happily. “I am very happy with twelfth place and still have enough room for improvement,” continued Weger, who is competing for Austria at the European Championships. Valentin Luther also came in twelfth place in the first run in the U18 category.

Only Jakob Weger did not qualify for the semi-finals in the first qualifying. With six penalty seconds for three contacts with the goal post and a major mistake at the end of the run, the younger of the Weger brothers only ended up in 33rd place. In the second qualifying, the 19-year-old SCM paddler really accelerated and achieved 95,08 seconds the best time of the day without any penalty seconds and thus secured the ticket for the semi-final run.

“Today I wanted to qualify for the semi-finals with a safe first run, as there are only ten places left in the second run. But a serious mistake at the end of the first run forced me to do the second run,” said Jakob Weger after the race. “I then approached the second run calmly and even achieved the best time of the day.”

On Friday from 14 p.m. there will be paddling for the medals in the kayak one-team race. All three Burggräfler canoeists have a chance of winning a medal. In the U23 category, Jakob Weger paddles with Marcello Beda and Marco Vianello for Italy, while Matthias Weger paddles with Felix Oschmautz and Mario Leitner for Austria. Valentin Luther is competing for Italy in the U18 category with Tommaso Fasoli and Davide Ghisetti.
