Lukas Mayr and Matthias Weger narrowly beaten in the home race

There was a close decision today in the premier class, the men's kayak one. After the first run, Lukas Mayr led with a time of 101,19 seconds ahead of the Swiss Martin Dougoud (1.02,25:1.02,87) and the German Tim Maxeiner (99,06:99,74). In the second run, the general attack came from Maxeiner, who was able to clearly beat Mayr's best time from the first run in 1,5 seconds. The German improved by three seconds compared to his time in the first round. Mayr was also able to improve his time from the first round by 0,68 seconds with XNUMX seconds. Nevertheless, he had to settle for second place in the end (+XNUMX seconds). Third place went to the Swiss Martin Dougoud.

Lukas Mayr: “More than satisfied”

“I am more than satisfied with second place in my first home race, especially since I started training late this year because of my economics studies at the University of Bolzano. I made four small mistakes. With a little more training, victory would have been possible today. Technically I drove well. “I ran out of breath at the end of the first run,” said Lukas Mayr, happy about his second place. Tim Maxeiner celebrated his second victory at the international canoe slalom in Meran. Lukas Mayr, who celebrates his 24th birthday on Monday, became the first Merano resident to win the international canoe slalom in Meran two years ago in the kayak single. Tomorrow the local hero has the second chance to win his home race for the second time.

Matthias Weger: “Tomorrow I have a second chance”

Like Lukas Mayr, Matthias Weger also took second place. In the junior kayak singles (U18), the 17-year-old from Merano had to bow to the Italian Davide Del Tin (105,62) by just a blink of an eye in 105,49 seconds. The Swiss Manuel Munsch came third (105,70). After the Junior European Championships in Bourg Saint Maurice (France), Matthias Weger also secured his ticket for the Junior World Championships in Liptovsky Mikulas (Slovakia) in the kayak single sculls.

“I am happy about second place in my home race and, above all, that I managed to qualify for the Junior World Championships. I made several small mistakes and therefore narrowly missed out on winning. Tomorrow I have a second chance to win my home race,” beamed Matthias Weger.

Tomorrow from 10 a.m. the second race will be held as part of the 58th International Canoe Slalom in Merano. The start of the race was postponed by half an hour.
