Matthias and Jakob Weger miss the World Cup final

Matthias Weger was first in action. The 19-year-old, who competed for Austria, put in an excellent race and was able to increase his running time by four seconds from Wednesday's qualifying. Unfortunately, he incurred a two-second penalty at goal number three for touching the goalpost, which cost him the final run. A protest was lodged against this, but the jury could not be changed. So he came in 15th place in the semifinals. The fastest was the two-time European champion in the general class, Jiri Prskavec from the Czech Republic, with a time of 86,29 seconds. “I am very satisfied with my performance in my first World Cup start in the U23 class. It's a shame that the two seconds penalty for a controversial contact with the goalpost cost me the final run," regrets Matthias Weger.

His brother Jakob, who paddles for Italy, also missed the final. After a time-wasting line error at goal number four, he risked everything and clearly missed the final run. In addition to his running time of 97,72 seconds, there were also ten penalty seconds for five contacts with the goal post. Jakob Weger had to settle for 107,72th place with a time of 36 seconds. The fastest time was achieved by Frenchman Malo Quemeneur (89,91 seconds/0 penalty seconds).

Today the Weger brothers still have a chance of winning a medal in the kayak single team run in the U23 class. Jakob competes in the Italian national team with Giovanni De Gennaro and Zeno Ivaldi. Matthias Weger, on the other hand, will start in the team run this evening (CEST) with Mario Leitner and Felix Oschmautz in the Austrian national team.
