Matthias Weger starts the Olympia mission

As in the previous year, of the successful canoeing brothers Weger from Schenna, only the older one, Matthias (2019), qualified for the general class 23 European Canoe Slalom Championships in Pau, France. His younger brother Jakob (20), however, missed out on one of Italy's three European Championship tickets in the kayak single sculls like last year. Matthias is starting again this season for the Austrian Canoe Association. The Canoe Slalom European Championships will be held from Friday to Sunday in the technically very demanding Kunstkanal in Pau (France). For the Austrian slalom canoeists, the European Canoe Slalom Championships in Pau is also the first of two qualifying competitions for the 3 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The second qualifying competition is the Canoe Slalom World Championships in October in La Seu D'Urgell, Spain.

Only one ticket is available From Friday, Matthias Weger will be paddling in Pau like 4 years ago with the Carinthians Felix Oschmautz and Mario Leitner for Austria's only Olympic ticket in the canoe slalom in the kayak single sculls. “My main goal at the European Canoe Slalom Championships is to give myself a good starting position in the fight for the Olympic starting place,” says Matthias Weger. The Schenner has two appearances on Friday, in the morning in the qualification in the kayak single sculls and in the afternoon in the K2 team run. “I spent 1 weeks in France to prepare as best I could for the European Championships in Pau. “The route suits me very well,” says Matthias Weger confidently.

On Friday in Pau between 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. there will be 2 qualifying runs in the men's kayak singles, with the best 1 in the 30st run and a further ten in the 2nd run making it to the semi-finals. On Sunday, the semi-final and final races in the men's kayak singles are on the program. Giovanni De Gennaro, Zeno Ivaldi and Marcello Beda will be competing for Italy in the kayak single sculls at the European Canoe Slalom Championships in Pau. On Friday, Matthias Weger will also compete in the K14 team run for Austria between 00:17 p.m. and 30:1 p.m. with Mario Leitner and Felix Oschmautz. .The trio can be expected to achieve a top ranking if they are in good form on the day. Last year, Weger, Oschmautz and Leitner narrowly missed out on a medal in fifth place in the kayak single team race at the European Canoe Slalom Championships in Prague.
