Merano is once again in the limelight of canoeists

Two international races are on the program in the Gilf natural arena. On Saturday there will be separate rankings for juniors (U18) and seniors (general class), as well as the U23 Italian Championship and the first qualification for the U18 European Championships and World Cup. Two races will take place from 9.30:17.00 a.m. to 9.00:14.00 p.m. On Sunday there will be a second race for a standard class with qualifying, semi-finals and finals from 120 a.m. to XNUMX p.m. XNUMX canoeists from eight countries, including seven SCM paddlers, registered.

Paddling takes place on a technically demanding course between the Gilfklamm and the Steinernem Steg. 18 to 20 gates, six of them upwards, must be paddled through as quickly as possible in the five boat classes: kayak singles and canoe singles for women and men as well as canoe doubles for men. After the snow has melted, the water level is almost ideal for the canoe slalom.

At the international canoe slalom in Meran, the successful canoeists from SC Meran will also be in action in the supreme discipline, the kayak single sculls. In their home races, Jakob Weger, Michael Luther, Martin Unterthurner, Valentin Luther, Jakob Luther and Peter Mulser as well as Matthias Weger, who competes for Naturfreunde Innsbruck, want to give their best. The Weger brothers are testing for their first World Cup appearance this season from June 3rd to 5th on the Dora Baltea in Ivrea (Piedmont).

The international canoe races on the Passer have been taking place since 1951. Meran has been the venue for the Canoe Slalom World Cup three times: 1953, 1971 and 1983. The Passer was also a stop in the Canoe Slalom World Cup twice: 2001 and 2004.
