Canoeists from Merano compete in qualifying for national teams

For Jakob Weger, Valentin Luther and Jakob Luther there will be the first highlight of the season this weekend in Ivrea (Piedmont). The three canoeists from SC Meran are in action in the world ranking canoe slalom and the U23 Italian Championships on the new competition course on the Dora Baltea.

The races in Ivrea will also be counted as the first two of four elimination races for the formation of the Italian national team for the U18, U23 and general class. The remaining two qualifying races for the general class and the U23 will take place on the first weekend in May in Tacen (Slovenia). This also includes qualifying for the general class canoe slalom European Championships from June 1st to 3rd in Prague, the U23 World Championships from July 17th to 22nd in Ivrea and the U23 European Championships from August 15th to 19th in Bratislava (Slovakia).

The three SC Meran athletes - Jakob Weger, Valentin Luther and Jakob Luther - have prepared very conscientiously for the new season over the winter months and are already in very good shape thanks to the numerous training sessions on the various slalom courses abroad.

Jakob Weger would like to qualify again for the national team in the general class and the U23. Last year, despite the density of strong athletes in the Italian canoe slalom event, Schenner immediately made it into the national team in the highest performance class. The 19-year-old is currently preparing diligently for his school-leaving exams and is therefore exposed to a double burden this year. The choice of racing boat also gave him a bit of a headache recently. After countless tests with new models, Weger decided to bring his old, traded-in boat back from the Czech Republic. Luckily it was still with the boat builder. With this boat he won gold at the U2016 European Championships in 18 and silver in the U23 European Championships last year.

For Valentin and Jakob Luther, the most important thing is to secure a place in the U18 national team. The last training sessions have been promising. Valentin Luther has now changed his boat model and is getting along very well with it. His cousin Jakob Luther, who is a year younger, has also made a big leap forward since last year.

Matthias Weger, Jakob Weger's brother, qualified for the Austrian A squad on the first weekend in May in Vienna. Unfortunately, he is currently suffering from acute tonsillitis. Matthias Weger and the Austrian national team will not take part in the world ranking canoe slalom in Ivrea this weekend.
