Slalom canoeists paddle for world ranking points in Merano

Last year's winner Matthias Weger (23) and his brother Jakob Weger (21) from Schenna are among the closest favorites in the supreme discipline, the men's single kayak.

Two years ago the international canoe slalom in Merano was almost canceled because the water level was too low. Last year the water level was high, but almost ideal for the canoe slalom. “This year the water level is very high due to the late melting of the snow. We are constantly monitoring the development of the water levels on the Passer and Pfelderer Bach. It just can’t rain in anymore,” says OC boss Walter Weger. “This time the 2 meter long canoe slalom from the Gilfklamm to the Steinernes Steg is a tough piece of work for all canoeists, not just the weaker ones,” believes the OC boss.

At the world ranking canoe slalom there will be 5 qualifying runs on Saturday in the 2 boat classes, kayak singles for women and men, canoe singles for women and men and canoe pairs mixed. The best paddlers qualify for the semi-final run, which, like the final run, is on the program on Sunday. Paddling takes place on a technically demanding course between the Gilfklamm and the Steinernem Steg. 18 to 20 gates, six of them upwards, have to be paddled through as quickly as possible. The course was shortened to 190 meters with the same number of gates at international level to make the canoe slalom even more spectacular.

10 Burggräfler slalom canoeists are also taking part in the 64th International Canoe Slalom in Merano. They are led by Jakob (21) and Matthias Weger (23) from Schenna, who won the world ranking canoe slalom in Meran last year. For the cousins Valentin and Jakob Luther, the 3rd qualification is also about tickets for the Canoe Slalom World Championships and European Championships for the U23 and U18. Martin Unterthurner, Lukas and Hansjörg Mayr as well as the three young slalom canoeists from SC Meran/Torggler, Jonas Walter, Paul Tirler and Tamara Drescher, will also start.
