Four Burggräfler canoeists paddle at the European Canoe Championships

As with the World Cup, the four Burggräfler canoeists Matthias and Jakob Weger, Valentin Luther and Martin Unterthurner are taking part again. Matthias Weger (20) competes in the U23 kayak singles for the Austrian Canoe Association. Jakob Weger, Luther and Unterthurner, all three canoeists from SC Meran, are on the Italian national team as in Krakow. The qualification runs in the kayak single sculls will be held in both age groups on Thursday. The semi-final and final races, however, are on the program on Saturday. On Friday there are already the kayak single team runs for both age groups. The SC Meran trio with Jakob Weger, Luther and Unterthurner is competing for Italy in the U18 kayak one-on-one team run. It is still completely unclear whether Matthias Weger can take part in the U23 kayak singles team run for Austria, as it is unclear whether the Austrian starter in the Olympic canoe slalom in Rio in the kayak singles, Mario Leitner, will come to Neugörz.

All four South Tyrolean canoeists want to qualify for the semi-finals. However, it is not yet clear whether Jakob Weger can even start. “As I am currently suffering from severe back pain, I can only hope that I will be able to take part in the race. If this is the case, I will concentrate on a flawless ride and do my best,” says Jakob Weger. “After my elbow injury suffered at the World Championships in Krakow, I am fit to compete again. My goal for the European Championships is to drive a clean race and get the best out of it. If everything goes smoothly, it’s definitely possible for me to make it to the final,” believes Matthias Weger.

Four Burggräfler canoeists paddle at the European Canoe Championships

Six weeks after the U23 and U18 Canoe Slalom World Championships in Krakow, the Isonzo in Solkan/New Gorizia (Slovenia) will be the venue for the European title fights in the same age group from tomorrow to Sunday.
