Four canoeists from Meran are aiming high at the World Championships

The first highlight of the season for four Burggräfler slalom canoeists begins on Tuesday with the Canoe Slalom World Championships on the Dora Baltea in Piedmont. The route, located in the center of the town of Ivrea, has been restored in time for the World Cup after flooding from the Dora Baltea in May tore away part of the mountain-side storage barrier.

This season there is something new: with Matthias (22) and Jakob Weger (20) from Schenna as well as Valentin (17) and Jakob Luther (17) from Meran, four canoeists from SC Meran/Torggler have for the first time taken part in a major canoe slalom event U23 and U18 qualified. So far, three of the four Burggräflers have only been able to celebrate winning European Championship medals; they have not yet won any World Championship medals. It will be a very special event for the youngest slalom canoeist in the SC Meran elite squad, Jakob Luther, as he has secured a ticket for the U18 World Championships and U18 European Championships in Bratislava in August in Bratislava for the first time in the kayak single scull ( Slovakia).

Luthers want to get to the final The four canoeists from South Tyrol go into these title fights with high expectations, especially Valentin and Jakob Luther, who have prepared intensively for the World Championships in Ivrea. Both want to qualify for the finals in the U18. “My main goal is to get to the final. Anything can happen in the final. Physically I'm in good shape. There are still little things to work on on the boat, but that should be fine until the race. “On the whole, I plan to take things easy and get good runs,” says Valentin Luther. “My goal in Ivrea is to make a clean run in qualifying to get to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals I try to attack fully in order to possibly make it to the final. Everything is possible there. “I feel in good shape and hope I can put the performance I achieved in the last races into practice at the World Championships in Ivrea,” says Jakob Luther. Wegers have their sights set on a medal Jakob Weger, on the other hand, had to miss some training sessions because he had just graduated from high school with great success. Nevertheless, he wants to make it to the finals of the U23 World Championships and also compete for a medal. His brother Matthias Weger, who is competing again for the Austrian Canoe Association, still suffers from Pfeiffer's glandular fever. After his victory in the world ranking canoe slalom in Merano, Schenner was unable to qualify for the semi-finals of both canoe slalom world cups in Liptovsky Mikulas (Slovakia) and Krakow (Poland) due to his illness. Matthias Weger skipped the 3rd Canoe Slalom World Cup in Augsburg to recover from his illness. Because of this he was also unable to train in Ivrea. He only travels to Piedmont four days before the start of the competition in order to recover a bit beforehand. Nevertheless, he wants to give it his all and be at the forefront. It starts on Tuesday The first medal decisions will be made at the U23 and U18 World Championships in Ivrea for the Burggräfler slalom canoeists on Tuesday in the team races. The individual races begin on Wednesday with the qualification in the U23 kayak single sculls with Matthias and Jakob Weger. On Thursday, Valentin and Jakob Luther will be in action in the U18 kayak sculls qualifying. The semi-finals and finals will be held in both age groups at the end of the World Championships on Sunday.
