Four South Tyroleans at the Junior Canoe Championships

After the fantastic success almost four weeks ago at the U23 Canoe Slalom World Championships on the Dora Baltea in Ivrea (Piedmont) with Jakob Weger's first world title in the kayak single scull, the four slalom canoeists from SC Meran will be competing in the Slovakian capital from Thursday Bratislava will once again take part in a major canoe slalom event.

The U23 and U18 European Championships in canoe slalom will be held in the Cunovo Canal from Thursday to Sunday. Jakob Weger can make canoeing history again in Bratislava if he manages to win the U23 European Championship title after winning the U23 World Championship title in the kayak single sculls.

The canoe slalom European Championships begin on Thursday for the slalom canoeists from the Burggrafenamt in both age groups with the qualification in the kayak single sculls. 30 canoeists, 20 in the first run and 10 in the second run, qualify for the semi-final run, which, like the final run in the kayak single sculls, will be held in both age groups on Saturday. Reaching the semi-finals is the minimum goal for the four canoeists from Schenna and Merano. On Friday there will be paddling for medals in the team race in both age groups.

“I know the track in Bratislava quite well from last year’s U23 World Championships. It is very demanding and has some tricky areas. I will probably start again with my old, tried and tested boat. Unfortunately it was recently damaged during training. But that shouldn't be a major problem. My goal, as always, is to get to the final and have a good run there. A medal would of course be ideal, even if I have already achieved my biggest goal this season,” says Jakob Weger.

Matthias Weger injured His brother Matthias still has health problems. He still suffers from Pfeiffer's glandular fever. Nevertheless, he wants to give his best at the U23 World Cup and possibly win another team medal with Austria. European Championship premiere for Jakob Luther Valentin and Jakob Luther also have big plans for the U18 European Championships. Jakob is competing for the first time, Valentin for the third time. “I feel fit. As the test race showed, I'm in good shape. I like the route and will approach the competition quite easily in order to concentrate on what's important. The goal is the final,” hopes Valentin Luther. “My goal is to have solid runs in Bratislava in order to reach the final. With fourth place at the U18 World Championships, we showed that we can be at the forefront of the team run. We want to prove that again,” says Jakob Luther.
