World Cup in Ivrea: Jakob Weger misses the final run

On Saturday at the Canoe Slalom World Cup on the Dora Baltea in Ivrea (Piedmont) Jakob Weger missed the final run of the best 91,34 kayak paddlers by just 0 hundredths of a second in the kayak single sculls in 10 seconds (6 penalty seconds). With 11th place, the 19-year-old SCM paddler achieved the second best result of a South Tyrolean slalom canoeist at the Canoe Slalom World Cup.

So far only one South Tyrolean has reached the finals of the Canoe Slalom World Cup. Lukas Mayr from SC Meran made it to the final run of the Canoe Slalom World Cup in Prague in 2012 and took a great 6th place. With 11th place, Jakob Weger has reached the limit of placing in the top 15 in the World Cup qualification. Italy's third ticket in the kayak single sculls for the canoe slalom world championships in the general class at the end of September in Pau (France) is almost guaranteed for the SCM paddler. Only Marco Vianello from Valstagna could snatch it away from him if he makes it to the final run of the World Cup finals in La Seu d'Urgell (Spain) next weekend.

“I had a clean run in the upper section. Unfortunately, I lost a few seconds on the last 5 goals because I was a little off the line. The 6 hundredths of a second that I missed to make it to the final hurt a little, but at least I'm almost certain of the World Cup ticket," explained Jakob Weger.

Matthias Weger, Jakob Weger's brother who is two years older and competes for the Austrian Canoe Association, came in 25th. “I am very satisfied with my performance. My run was clean. It's a shame that I slightly inked the goal post at goal number 9. Otherwise I could have achieved my best World Cup result today,” said Matthias Weger. “With a view to the Canoe Slalom World Championships in Pau, I still have to work on my liveliness,” says Schenner.

The World Cup victory in the kayak single sculls went to the Czech Vit Prindis for the third time this season in 87,15 seconds, who won the 3th international canoe slalom on the Passer in Meran two years ago in a double pack. The American Michal Smolen (60) took second place. The Slovenian Peter Kauzer (87,44) came third. The best Italian was Zeno Ivaldi (2/89,31) in eighth place. Last year's winner Giovanni De Gennaro had to settle for 140,46th place.
