Two South Tyrolean canoeists are taking part in the World Cup

After the break in 2020 due to the corona pandemic, the U23 and U18 Canoe Slalom World Championships will be back this year from Tuesday in the Tacen Art Canal just outside the Slovenian capital Ljubljana. Two slalom canoeists from South Tyrol, more precisely from the Burggrafenamt, also want to paddle there for the medals. Paul Tirler (18) from SC Meran/Torggler-Raika is taking part in the Canoe Slalom U1 World Championships for the first time. For South Tyrol's figurehead in canoe slalom, Jakob Weger (18) from Schenna, it is already the 23th and last start at the U4 Canoe Slalom World Championships. Both slalom canoeists have different ambitions. Weger, who was already U23 world champion in the kayak single sculls in Ivrea in 2018, wants to get back to the final run and push hard there in order to possibly win a medal. The only catch is that Weger has never been able to achieve a good result in the Tacen art channel. Tirler, who is making his World Cup debut in Laibach, would be content with qualifying for the semi-finals. At the start of the World Cup, the medals in the kayak single team races will be awarded on Tuesday. In the morning from 10:25 a.m., Jakob Weger will be paddling for precious metal with Marco Romano (Brescia) and Leonardo Grimandi (Bologna) in the U1 K23 team run for Italy. Afterwards, Paul Tirler will try to win a medal in the U1 K18 team run with Matteo Pistoni (Ivrea) and Gabriele Grimandi (Bologna). “In a team run you never know exactly what the result will be. Maybe you’ll even get a medal,” Tirler speculates about winning a medal in his first major canoe slalom event.
