Will Bolzano get an Olympic pool?

The local branches of the Italian Swimming Association and the national association for sport fishing and underwater activity finally want to create facts and end the discussions that have been going on for years about a 50-meter swimming pool in the state capital. They are now pushing ahead with an ambitious citizens' project to realize the construction of the sports facility.

The state government and the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) are said to have already given their approval, now it remains to convince local politicians of the project. This should take place before the upcoming municipal elections. “This project is of great importance for both sports associations and clubs. The state government and CONI have already promised a contribution, now the city of Bolzano has to give its okay. “Especially since the new swimming pool would be built here,” explains Giulio Angelucci, President of the South Tyrolean Swimming Association. “The signature collection is already underway. We will soon submit an application to the municipality with around 500 supporters. We don’t want a swimming pool for major sporting events, but rather a facility that meets the training needs of the clubs and the leisure interests of the population.”

FIPSAS President Herbert Gostner takes the same line: “I hope that this project will be a definitive breakthrough and that we will be able to use a 50-meter pool in the foreseeable future.”

One person who would particularly benefit from the new swimming pool is Dario Taraboi, who, as a coach at Bolzano Nuoto, looks after countless swimming athletes. “Training on a 50-meter track is a completely different world than in a pool half as long. In the long term, construction is unavoidable in order to introduce our athletes to competitive sports in the future. We currently have to travel to Verona to complete our training sessions in the 50-meter pool,” concluded Taraboi.

The Bolzano swimming athletes are defending themselves: by collecting signatures, they want to persuade the mayor to agree to the construction of a 50-meter pool. This could be built at the Bolzano rectory.
