This is Laura Letrari's last big career dream

The woman from Brixen will be 17 years old in 33 days, but her drive is unbroken. She recently spent a month getting in shape and training very well at training camps on the long track in Lanzarote and Tenerife. She is doing everything she can to take part in the European Championships in Rome in August. That would be the perfect end to a successful career.

Letrari is happy with her current form. On Sunday she swam a short-course national record in Bolzano, and this weekend she will take part in the “Meeting del Titano” in San Marino, the first test of strength for the Italian elite in the European Championship and World Cup year in the 50 m pool. The program includes 100 and 200 m freestyle, 50 m backstroke and 200 m individual medley. Training under palm trees: Laura Letrari is working hard for her last big career goal.

“I was at Club La Santa on Lanzarote from January 14th to February 1st.” She is a regular guest on her favorite island. Afterwards, from February 1st to 12th, her training group from Linz continued directly to Tenerife. “There I worked with Ronald Gaastra, a coach from Belgium, who led Pieter Timmers to Olympic silver in the 100m freestyle in Rio,” says Letrari. “And I have to say that I had no idea that you could still learn so much at the age of 33.” Letrari also trained in Tenerife with athletes from Iceland and Lithuania, including Olympic champion Ruta Meilutyte. “I just feel good.” Laura Letrari She will only stay in Bolzano until the end of next week. Here she trains at Bolzano Nuoto under her long-term coach Paul Dalsass. “He always tells me not to put too much pressure on myself, but I just feel good at the moment.” Qualifying for the European Championships in Rome in August is her last big goal. “I was there at the 2009 World Cup at the Foro Italico and it was unforgettable.”

In just a week we're going back to Lanzarote. From February 26th to March 5th she will be training on the island of her heart in the 50m pool with training partner Marco Zanin and “trainer” Nicole Vallata. From March 11th to 13th she will take part in the state championships in Meran. The next training camp with the team from Linz will take place in Belek, Turkey, from March 16th to 30th. The first big goal of Letrari 2022 is the Italian Indoor Championships in Riccione from April 9th to 13th. She definitely wants to compete there in the 100 and 200 m freestyle – and perhaps also in the 200 m individual medley. Letrari has always been optimistic and successful. Very few people believed that she would once again become the Italian champion in the 30 m individual medley on the short course on November 100th. “But I always believed in myself and my chance.” That’s how it is this time too. Finally, Federica Pellegrini is no longer there. Italy's best swimmer of all time has announced her retirement at the end of 2021. This means there are 4 places up for grabs in the freestyle relays at the European Championships in the summer. And Letrari still has the confidence to be one of the four fastest freestyle swimmers. Even though she has officially no longer been a member of the army sports group as an athlete since January 4th. She is on unpaid leave and will not start her assigned job with the army in Brunico until the fall. Maybe with good memories of the European Championships in Rome.
