An Olympic champion is preparing for the world record in Meran

It has been clear since the beginning of March that two world-class Italian swimmers, Gregorio Paltrinieri and Gabriele Detti, will be competing in Merano. The two, together with their coach Stefano Morini and physiotherapist Stefano Amirante, will hold a one-week training camp in the Passerstadt from Monday, June 12th to Monday, June 19th. But that's not enough. Morini has called up two other swimmers from the Italian national team for the training camp. Ilaria Cusinato and Martina Caramignoli will train in Merano with a view to the Sette Colli meeting a week later in Rome (June 24th to 26th). The highlight of the year is the Long Course World Championships in Budapest at the end of July.

Paltrinieri and Detti no longer need to be introduced to the experts and fans. Paltrinieri has dominated the 1500 m freestyle around the world for years. At the beginning of the season, Detti made people sit up and take notice with world best times of the year. At the Italian Championships in Rome he also improved Massimiliano Rosolino's 17-year-old Italian record in the 400 m freestyle to 3.43,36:XNUMX minutes.

Ilaria Cusinato was born in 1999. She comes from San Martino di Lupari in Veneto and won gold in the 200 m individual medley and bronze in the 400 m individual medley at the indoor championships a month ago in Riccione. At the age of 15, she won two silver medals (in the 2015 and 200 m individual medley) at the 400 European Games in Baku. Martina Caramignoli comes from Rieti, she will be 25 years old on May 26th and is also a member of the national team. Her greatest international success was winning European Championship bronze in the 1500 m freestyle at the 2014 European Championships in Berlin.

But the sprinters won't be missing at the 2nd Cool Swim Meeting either. South Tyrol's swimming figurehead Laura Letrari was also nominated by the “Azzurri” for the event in the Passer city. The organizers are particularly pleased about Laura Letrari's start, after all, the 28-year-old from Brixen is hunting for a World Cup ticket in the freestyle relay. Letrari already put her stamp on the meeting with peak times at the premiere last year. She is also captain of Bolzano Nuoto, the most successful team in South Tyrol.

Gregorio Patrinieri – Italy’s number one swimming star

Greg, as he is known in swimming circles, doesn't really need any introduction. Born on September 5, 1994 in Carpi, Paltrinieri first attracted attention throughout Italy in 2011 and qualified for the World Championships in Shanghai by winning the 1500 m freestyle at the Sette Colli meeting in Rome. Previously, Paltrinieri, not yet 17 years old, won gold at the Junior European Championships in Belgrade and silver shortly afterwards at the Junior World Championships in Peru on his parade course in the 1500 m freestyle. From then on he has steadily improved and taken giant steps towards absolute world class. Paltrinieri is currently Italy's men's swimming star and arguably the best 1500m freestyle swimmer in the world. The 22-year-old became Olympic champion in the longest distance in pool swimming in Rio (in 14.34,57:14.39,67). He is also the reigning world champion on the long track (2015:2014 in 2016 in Kazan). At the European Championships in Berlin in 800 and in London in 1500, he achieved the gold double twice in the 800 and 1500 m freestyle. In the 50 and 14.34,04 m freestyle, Paltrinieri also holds the European records in the 7.40,81 m pool (1500 and 14.08,06 respectively) and the continental record in the 13 m short course (1500). The XNUMX-time Italian champion will take part in his parade course over XNUMX m freestyle in Meran and test his form shortly before the World Championships. “Greg will try to set a new world record in the 1500m freestyle at the upcoming World Championships in Budapest. He will therefore present himself in top form in Meran and put the finishing touches on,” announced the technical director of the Cool Swim Meeting Marco Giongo at the press conference on Thursday.

Gabriele Detti – the next champion from Italy In addition to Paltrinieri, Gabriele Detti is also a big name in Italian swimming and an attraction for the Cool Swim Meeting in Merano. Same vintage as Paltrinieri, Detti was born on August 29, 1994 in Livorno. Detti won two medals at last year's Games in Rio. Bronze in the 400 m freestyle (3.43,49) and also bronze in the 1500 m freestyle (14.40,86). Detti also secured European Championship gold in the 400 m freestyle in London in May last year in 3.44,01:800 minutes and picked up three more medals. He secured silver behind Paltrinieri in the 1500 and 7.43,53 m freestyle in 14.48,75 and 4 respectively, as well as bronze with Italy's relay in the 200 x 2016 m freestyle. For Detti, it was a triumphant return to the big swimming stage in 2015 after missing most of the XNUMX season due to an infection. But he has already impressively proven that he is in form this season.

SC Meran and AS Meran form the organizational team The idea of setting up an international meeting came to Meran in 2015 after the new 50 m pool in Meran was officially opened. In 2016, the Cool Swim Meeting was launched with the establishment of a historic organizing committee. Historically, because the two once rival swimming clubs in the Passerstadt, the Sportclub Meran/Schwimmen and AS Merano Nuoto, have common cause and work together. “We want to reach even more people through the collaboration between the two Merano sports clubs. Our main goal was to bring the sport to the people,” emphasized SCM President Karl Freund. “The whole of Merano can be proud of this and many other sporting events. I am particularly pleased that the Cool Swim Meeting was created by combining forces. Just like it should always be in sport,” explained the sports assessor from Meran Gabi Strohmer.

Three days and five competition sections At the Cool Swim Meeting, it's not just the general class that is evaluated, the youngsters are also in focus. That's why there are separate ratings in the children's and juniors categories. For boys, these are the years 2001/03 (children) and 1999/00 (juniors) and the general class (years 1998 and older). For girls, the years 2003/04 (children), 2001/02 (juniors) and 2000 and older (general class) are evaluated separately. This year, the competitions will last not just two but three days on the third weekend in June and are divided into five sections.
