Italy's swimming elite comes to Merano

After a Corona-related break last year, the Cool Swim Meetin in Merano is celebrating its comeback from June 18th to 20th and at the same time its 5th edition. It will be 3 days with peak times and lots of exciting competitions, as many of Italy's best swimmers have registered. The athletes who are in the Passer city this year have collectively won no fewer than 11 medals at the European Championships in Budapest in May, which has become the most successful European Swimming Championships of all time for the Italian federation. The Cool Swim Meeting is a dress rehearsal for the Sette Colli Meeting a week later at the Foro Italico in Rome, the last important competition before the Tokyo Olympics, which swimmers from all over the world have been looking forward to for 5 years. “The sport of swimming has been hit harder by the pandemic than few other sports. It was with a heavy heart that we decided not to host the meeting last year, but we are now coming back stronger,” says OC President Walter Taranto, who is also President of the South Tyrolean State Committee. Together with his many employees, he put together a meeting that was worth seeing. “We had a lot of inquiries from all over Italy, but also from abroad, from Austria and Germany, because of competitions are still in short supply, but you can feel that everyone wants to get back in the water.” Many well-known names will be at the start in Merano. Starting with the swimmers of the Italian national team, which is led by exceptional talent Gabriele Detti and is currently preparing for the Olympics with a high-altitude training camp in Livigno. Letrari is also at the start Detti won the bronze medal in the 800 m freestyle in Budapest. Di Cola won two bronze medals with Italy's 4 x 200 m freestyle relay team in the Hungarian capital, while De Tullio also won one bronze medal in the relay. “In view of the sanitary emergency and because it is an Olympic year, we have decided on a meeting in a reduced form,” says Marco Giongo, the technical director of the meeting, “But we are pleasantly surprised by the great interest from so many Champions and the large number of registrations from clubs from Italy and abroad.” Thomas Ceccon, one of the stars of the Italian selection, is coming to Merano. Ceccon won three bronze medals in Budapest. Alberto Razzetti also comes to South Tyrol with silver and bronze around his neck. He was the big discovery in Budapest and improved his best time by ten seconds in the 400 m individual medley. The latest commitment for the Meran meeting concerns long-distance specialist Martina Rita Caramignoli, who celebrated her 1500th birthday on May 30th by winning the bronze medal in the 25 m freestyle at the European Championships. Sara Franceschi, who came fourth and fifth in the 200 and 400 m individual medley at the European Championships, will also be at the start. Around 600 athletes are currently registered and the registration deadline expires this Friday. Bolzano Nuoto is also coming to Meran - led by Laura Letrari.
