End of career: Lisa Fissneider is calling it quits

This Monday, Fissneider will resign from the financial sports group in Rome. Her career is officially over. This bottom-place finish comes as a huge surprise, as the Kalter native only changed coaches in late summer last year and wanted to show everyone again for the new competition season.

“I was really motivated in September, but after the Coppa Brema on December 17th I thought about myself and tried to see everything realistically. I'm pretty far away from the top in Italy and I know how much I would have to give to get back up there. “I didn’t see anything beyond that,” the former top talent is quoted as saying in the daily newspaper “Dolomiten”. She stopped training professionally at the end of the year. Fissneider wants to stay with the financial police and combine this job with studying economics at the University of Bolzano.

Into the spotlight as an exceptional talent

Fissneider's swimming career really took off in 2009 when she became Italian champion in the 15 and 50 meter breaststroke at the tender age of 100. A year later, the Überetscher, together with Laura Letrari from Brixen, won bronze in the medley relay at the European Short Course Championships in Eindhoven. In 2011 she achieved what was probably the greatest success of her career: in Peru she was crowned junior world champion twice and also won a silver medal. She later set two Italian records in the 50 and 100 m breaststroke at the European Short Course Championships in Herning, which were broken just a few weeks ago. In recent years, the young Kalter native has repeatedly struggled with injuries, but took part in the European Championships in London in 2016. It was her last appearance at a major event. Fissneider leaves as 13-time Italian champion.
