European Short Course Championship: Köhler as fastest in the 400 m final

Copenhagen (SID) (AFP) 800 m European champion Sarah Köhler also underlined her title ambitions in the 400 m freestyle at the European Short Course Championships in Copenhagen. Three days after her triumph over twice the distance, the 23-year-old from Frankfurt/Main moved into the final on Sunday evening as the fastest in 4:04,31 minutes. The men's 4x50 m medley relay also raised medal hopes on the last day of competition. The German quartet with Christian Diener (Potsdam), Fabian Schwingenschlögl (Neckarsulm), Marius Kusch (Munich) and Damian Wierling (Essen) qualified for the final with the third best time (1:33,44). Jessica Steiger (Gladbeck) also swam into the final in seventh place in the 200 m breaststroke (2:22,94). Diener reached the semifinals in the 50 m backstroke in sixth place (23,53 seconds) and Marek Ulrich (Halle/Saale) in 15th place. European medley champion Philip Heintz (Heidelberg) failed in the preliminary heat in twelfth place in the 200 m butterfly (1: 54,44) and Celine Rieder (Neckarsulm) as 18th in the 400 m freestyle (4:12,38). The women's medley relay was disqualified because final swimmer Aliena Schmidtke (Magdeburg) started too early.
