European Short Course Championships: Köhler wins silver with a record in the 400 m freestyle

Copenhagen (SID) (AFP) Three days after her triumph over 800 m, Sarah Köhler won another medal at the European Short Course Championships in Copenhagen. The 23-year-old from Frankfurt/Main swam to silver in the 400 m freestyle final in a German record time of 3:59,12 minutes. Gold went to the Hungarian Boglarka Kapas. It was the seventh precious metal for the German Swimming Association (DSV). The men's medley relay narrowly missed out on an eighth medal in the 4x50 m. The quartet with Christian Diener (Potsdam), Fabian Schwingenschlögl (Neckarsulm), Marius Kusch (Munich) and Damian Wierling (Essen) landed in fifth place in 1:32,38 minutes. Bronze was 32 hundredths of a second away; Russia won the last title in a world record time (1:30,44). Previously, the medals had been out of reach for Jessica Steiger (Gladbeck) and Aliena Schmidtke (Magdeburg) despite personal best times. Steiger stayed two seconds below her old record in the 200 m breaststroke in 2:20,84 minutes and came fifth. Schmidtke had to settle for eighth place in the 57,17 m butterfly in 100 seconds. Christian Diener (Potsdam) also came in eighth place in the 50 m backstroke in 23,48 seconds.
