European Short Course Championship: Mixed relay swims into the final in seventh place

Copenhagen (SID) (AFP) On the penultimate day of the European Short Course Championships in Copenhagen, the German mixed relay team swam to the final in the 4x50 m freestyle. Damian Wierling (Essen), Marius Kusch (Munich), Jessica Steiger (Gladbeck) and Aliena Schmidtke (Magdeburg) qualified seventh for the final on Saturday evening in 1:31,92 minutes. Wierling had previously also made it to the semi-finals in 50th place in the 23,06 m butterfly (100 seconds) and 47,50 m freestyle (14). However, the Essen native will forgo his start on the butterfly course in the evening. Magdeburg's Aliena Schmidtke reached the semi-finals of the 57,64 butterfly in ninth place in 100 seconds. "That was mediocre. I somehow feel like I'm swimming in the middle of the night," said the fourth-place finisher in the European Championships over 50 m. Short course double world champion Marco Koch decided not to start the 200 m individual medley two days after his silver medal in the 100 m breaststroke. The man from Darmstadt had been lying flat with a gastrointestinal virus shortly before the European Championships and declared after his elimination in the 100 m breaststroke on Friday: "You notice that the substance is missing." Koch flew home on Saturday. In addition to the relay, Wierling and Schmidtke, Fabian Schwingenschlögl (Neckarsulm), who qualified fifth for the final of the 100 m breaststroke on Friday, will also start in the evening. Nadine Laemmler (Neckarsulm) failed in the preliminary heat as 26th in the 50 m backstroke, Kusch as 31st in the 100 m freestyle, Jacob Heidtmann (Elmshorn) as 58th in the 100 m freestyle, Celine Rieder (Neckarsulm) as 28th in the 200 m Freestyle and Franziska Hentke (Magdeburg) one day after her triumph in the 200 m butterfly in 19th place over half the distance.
