European Short Course Championship: Schwingenschlögl and mixed relay miss out on medals

Copenhagen (SID) (AFP) The German swimmers came away empty-handed on the penultimate day of the European Short Course Championships in Copenhagen. US student Fabian Schwingenschlögl finished fifth in the 100 m breaststroke final after 56,95 seconds. The 26-year-old from Neckarsulm, who studies and trains at the University of Missouri, was almost seven tenths short of bronze. British Olympic champion Adam Peaty won gold with a European record (55,94). The mixed freestyle relay also had to settle for fifth place. The quartet with Damian Wierling (Essen), Marius Kusch (Munich), Jessica Steiger (Gladbeck) and Aliena Schmidtke (Magdeburg) swam well past the podium in 1:31,26 minutes. The Netherlands won the title in a world record time of 1:28,39 minutes. With a personal best time of 56,76 seconds, Schmidtke had previously finished fifth in the 100 m butterfly final on Sunday. The Magdeburg woman had only missed out on the precious metal by a few hundredths in the 50 m and in the mixed medley relay when she came fourth. Previously, Wierling had clearly failed in the semifinals of the 100 m freestyle, finishing 47,44th in 14 seconds.
