National Championship: Bolzano in a class of its own

The VSS/Raiffeisen State Swimming Championships were held for the 49th time this year. Last Sunday, VSS speaker Klaus Fissneider welcomed around 250 swimmers from all parts of the country to the Brixen Acquarena. “From the youngest to the athletes in the general class, we saw a lot of good performances again today. A big compliment to all of you,” said Fissneider happily.

The most successful swimmers once again came from SSV Bozen. They won 20 of 38 possible individual national championship titles, plus three triumphs in six relay decisions. In the end, the people of Bolzano scored an outstanding 392 points and were around 200 points ahead of the second-placed swimmers from SSV Bruneck. The SC Meran athletes secured third place with 180 points. At the same time, the national championships also showed that the other South Tyrolean clubs are catching up, especially among the youngest players. Among the little ones, the swimmers from SSV Bruneck and SSV Leifers in particular showed off and ensured that the Bolzano team's lead in these categories was “only” 38 and 43 points respectively.

A total of three female and one swimmers were able to celebrate two VSS/Raiffeisen individual national championship titles in Brixen. In the student A category, Dena Bacher from SC Brixen achieved this feat, in the general class Sabrina Weger from SSV Bozen was twice successful and in the youth category Arianna Tava and Daniel Waldner (both SSV Bozen) were able to celebrate two victories. In the youngest age groups, however, no swimmers managed to do this, an indication of the balance among the little ones. In the relay competitions there were three daily victories for SSV Bozen as well as two for SSV Bruneck and one for SC Meran.
