Swim meeting: Italy's swimming elite is also at the start

“Because the meeting in Lamezia Terme is not taking place this year, we have a lot of swimmers from the Italian national team at the start,” says OC boss Christian Mattivi from SSV Bozen. The short course event in Bolzano is of particular importance as it offers the Azzurri, who do not yet have their World Cup ticket in their pockets, the opportunity to qualify for the World Cup in Doha at the beginning of December. Bolzano is also a good test of form. That's why, after Fabio Scozzoli and Marco Orsi, other exceptional athletes are coming to South Tyrol. Erika Ferraioli, Silvia Di Pietro and Carlotta Zofkova also mentioned, as did Andrea Toniato and Federico Bocchia.

Ferraioli has been one of the Italian elite in the 50 and 100 m freestyle for many years. She has already won 22 Italian championship titles, and at the European Long Track Championships in Berlin in August she won her first gold medal at a major international event with the Italian mixed relay in the 4 x 100 m freestyle. On August 1, she also improved the eight-year-old Italian record in the 50 m freestyle to 25,07 seconds. This mark was improved to 24,84 seconds by Silvia Di Pietro at the European Championships in Berlin. Di Pietro also set a new Italian record in the 50m dolphin in Berlin, finishing fifth in 25,78 seconds.

Ryan Lochte remains the superstar

Carlotta Zofkova, who trains with Tamas Gyertyanffy in Verona, is one of the best backstroke swimmers in Italy. At the 2012 European Long Course Championships in Debrecen in 2012, she took fifth and sixth place in the 50 and 100 m backstroke. Andrea Toniato is one of the Azzurri's best breaststroke swimmers. At the European Championships he came fifth over 50 m and tenth over twice the distance.

The big superstar comes, of course, from the USA. Ryan Lochte will also answer questions from media representatives at the press conference on November 5th at “Speedo” in Bolzano. In addition to Amanda Weir, another top swimmer from overseas is Katie Meili, who won both the 50 and 100 m breaststroke in Bolzano last year and who will once again be one of the big rivals of Lisa Fissneider and Giulia De Ascentis. The Brit Christopher Steeples also wants to repeat his victory last year in the 100 m breaststroke in Bolzano. He is also being challenged by the Slovakian Marek Botik, among others.

There are still two weeks left until the 18th International Swim Meeting South Tyrol in the “Albert Pircher” hall at the Bolzano rectory. The number of top athletes who will be competing on November 8th and 9th continues to increase.
