Two Olympic medalists are coming to Meran

In the second edition, the Cool Swim Meeting suddenly becomes one of the most important events on the long course in Italy thanks to Paltrinieri and Detti. One week before the Sette Colli Meeting in Rome and around five weeks before the World Championships in Budapest, the Cool Swim Meeting will be the dress rehearsal for many top swimmers from Italy and Europe.

Walter Taranto, the president of AS Meran/swimming, and Marco Giongo, the sporting director of the meeting together with Volker Müller, traveled to Milan in February to meet with Stefano Morini, the coach of Paltrinieri and Detti, at the association's performance center in Ostia near Rome, and to meet the two stars in person and convince them to start in Meran. Paltrinieri and Detti said yes to the Cool Swim Meeting - and not only that. The two exceptional athletes will come to Merano for a full week from Monday, June 12th to Sunday, June 18th, train there and take part in the meeting at the weekend. “For both of them, Merano is an important stage with a view to the World Championships in Budapest at the end of July, the absolute highlight of this season,” says Marco Giongo. The fast pool in Merano convinced the two Azzurri and the organizers hope that, in addition to the South Tyrolean figureheads Laura Letrari (was there last year with Bolzano Nuoto) and Lisa Fissneider, it will also attract numerous top athletes from home and abroad World Cup dress rehearsal.

Gregorio Patrinieri – Italy’s number one swimming star Greg, as he is known in swimming circles, doesn't really need any introduction. Born on September 5, 1994 in Carpi, Paltrinieri first attracted attention throughout Italy in 2011 and qualified for the World Championships in Shanghai by winning the 1500 m freestyle at the Sette Colli meeting in Rome. Previously, Paltrinieri, not yet 17 years old, won gold at the Junior European Championships in Belgrade

Shortly afterwards, he won silver at the Junior World Championships in Peru on his parade course in the 1500 m freestyle. From then on he has steadily improved and taken giant steps towards absolute world class. Paltrinieri is currently Italy's men's swimming star and arguably the best 1500m freestyle swimmer in the world. The 22-year-old became Olympic champion in the longest distance in pool swimming in Rio (in 14.34,57:14.39,67). He is also the reigning world champion on the long track (2015:2014 in 2016 in Kazan). At the European Championships in Berlin in 800 and in London in 1500, he achieved the gold double twice in the 800 and 1500 m freestyle. In the 50 and 14.34,04 m freestyle, Paltrinieri also holds the European records in the 7.40,81 m pool (1500 and 14.08,06 respectively) and the continental record in the 13 m short course (1500). The XNUMX-time Italian champion will take part in his parade course over XNUMX m freestyle in Meran and test his form shortly before the World Championships.

Gabriele Detti – the rising star

In addition to Paltrinieri, Gabriele Detti is also a big name in Italian swimming and an attraction for the Cool Swim Meeting in Meran. Same vintage as Paltrinieri, Detti was born on August 29, 1994 in Livorno. Detti won two medals at last year's Games in Rio. Bronze in the 400 m freestyle (3.43,49) and also bronze in the 1500 m freestyle (14.40,86). Detti also secured European Championship gold in the 400 m freestyle in London in May last year in 3.44,01:800 minutes and picked up three more medals. He secured silver behind Paltrinieri in the 1500 and 7.43,53 m freestyle in 14.48,75 and 4 respectively, as well as bronze with Italy's relay in the 200 x 2016 m freestyle. For Detti, it was a triumphant return to the big swimming stage in 2015 after missing most of the XNUMX season due to an infection.

At the Cool Swim Meeting, it's not just the general class that is evaluated, the youngsters are also in focus. That's why there are separate ratings in the children's and juniors categories. For boys, these are the years 2001/03 (children) and 1999/00 (juniors) and the general class (years 1998 and older). For girls, the years 2003/04 (children), 2001/02 (juniors) and 2000 and older (general class) are evaluated separately. This year, the competitions will last not just two but three days on the third weekend in June and are divided into five sections.
