Schümann for switching to monohulls in the America's Cup

Hamburg (SID) Two-time America's Cup winner Jochen Schümann welcomes the upcoming switch to monohulls in the world's most important sailing regatta. “The last Cup was without a doubt spectacular, but also a bit far from sailing,” Schümann told the SID: “It was Formula 1 on the water in its purest form. With all the hydraulic systems, the spectators could hardly understand where the power comes from and what the sailors are doing right now." The Emirates Team New Zealand had previously indicated in a statement that in the future there would be sailing in “spectacular monohull yachts”. At the 35th America's Cup this summer, the "Kiwis" achieved victory on a high-tech catamaran. The official Cup protocol for the title defense, which is expected to take place in Auckland in 2021, is still pending publication. Schümann had already said before this year's world event that sailing had to remain visible. “To focus only on speed in the hunt for a lot of TV interest is a wrong conclusion,” said the 63-year-old: “The monohull boats should certainly be very fast and the speed could be even more noticeable - the Cup will continue to deliver spectacular images."
