Surfer von Rupp seventh in the Big Wave Challenge in front of Nazare

Nazaré (SID) Wave rider Nic von Rupp narrowly missed the final of the Big Wave Challenge in front of Nazare, but was happy about seventh place. “To be invited to an event like this and to be in the waves with the best big wave surfers in the world is great,” the 27-year-old, who lives in Sintra, Portugal, told SID. The competition pits the 24 best big wave surfers in the world against each other. The victory went to the Brazilian Lucas Chianca, who won with 21,39 points in waves over ten meters high. "Fear is always there. Anyone who says they are not afraid of surfing these huge waves is lying. However, for me it is important to deal with this fear and conquer the fear," said von Rupp, who completed his passage in won the first round. As fourth in his semi-final heat, he narrowly missed making it into the top six. "Everything is moving forward step by step. This contest here in Nazare was definitely a good step forward," said von Rupp, who used to compete for Germany but now competes for Portugal. Von Rupp's mother has roots in Switzerland and Portugal, his father is German-American. The globetrotter speaks five languages.
