Baby on the way: Tania Cagnotto finally stops

After the 2016 Olympic Games, Tania Cagnotto ended her glorious career and shortly afterwards became mother to little Maya. For months, the focus of Italy's most successful diver was on her newly founded family - until her good friend and synchronous partner Francesca Dallape came with a crazy idea. A comeback in the pool – as mommies (Dallape also became a mother during this time). A baby is on the way Cagnotto decided to give it a try. The goal would have been the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. However, Corona then threw all plans overboard. The games have been postponed by a year and will now take place in summer 2021. “I know that many people wanted to see me on the diving board again,” wrote the Bolzano native on social networks on Sunday: “I'm sorry to disappoint you, but during the lockdown I had a lot of time to reflect and weigh things up “What’s more important – sport or family.” The choice fell on the family. “On the one hand, I would have loved to take part in my 6th Olympic Games as a mother, but on the other hand, I also wanted to expand the family. In the end I chose life, family. Fate has given me a new life inside of me.” A “goodbye” to their sport Thus, one of the greatest sports careers in South Tyrol has come to an end. Cagnotto is a world champion, two-time Olympic medalist and 20-time European champion. She is also the most successful diver at European Championships with 29 medals (20 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze). In her farewell statement, Cagnotto also gives an indication of what her future could look like: “This will just be a goodbye to the world of diving, because I believe that I can still give something in another role.” With one She added with a wink: “And Maya (her daughter, editor’s note) will also need a trainer.”
