Tania Cagnotto: “Rio is getting closer and closer”

Tania Cagnotto showed everyone once again. Traveling to Berlin with many question marks about her physical fitness, the woman from Bolzano was one of the outstanding personalities in the title fights in the German metropolis. On the way back there were no more question marks in Cagnotto's suitcase, but three medals - two of them gold (from the 1 m board and in synchronized jumping with Francesca Dallapè) and one "silver" (from the 3 m board). She has thus far won precious metal 22 times in continental title fights. With 14 European Championship victories, Tania Cagnotto is the most successful diver of all time on the Old Continent.

“Of course I'm overjoyed with how things went in Berlin. I wasn't particularly well prepared for this European Championship and there were a lot of question marks. In May the swimming pool in Bolzano was closed and after that I couldn't really train anymore. Only in Trieste was I able to work continuously in a covered hall and this very intensive, ten-day training camp made the difference. Of course I hoped that I would achieve such a result, but announcing it would have been presumptuous. It was a wonderful European Championship,” said Tania Cagnotto in an interview SportNews .

The week in Berlin was very emotional. Starting with the gold medal on the 1m board, when Tania Cagnotto only secured victory with the last jump. It then continued with a brilliant performance in synchronized diving alongside Francesca Dallapè, before a botched last jump in the individual from the 3m board cost the Bolzano her third gold medal. “From the 1m board I had to really fight and give it my all. I was in first place with a big lead until the fourth jump, then I missed the penultimate jump and only with the last jump was I able to celebrate gold. We performed very convincingly in synchronized jumping and almost broke our own points record. That made me very happy for Francesca and me. However, I completely botched my jump from the 3m board, the two-and-a-half Auerbach somersault. Of course I was very sorry about that, I would have liked to get the third gold,” continued Cagnotto.

The recent successes have been very good for Tania Cagnotto. For morale. And for the motivation to keep going until 2016. Because the woman from Bolzano can look forward to the future with optimism. “Stopping now would make no sense. There are still two years left until the Olympic Games in Brazil and I hope to be there. That's what we work for. If everything continues like this, if nothing comes up, then we will carry on. I will continue to work with Oscar Bertone and my father Giorgio in the future. I think we have found the right compromise and can celebrate good successes in this constellation,” says the successful “Azzurra” about her future.

Now Tania Cagnotto is already on vacation with her thoughts. “On Friday we set off for Sardinia. I will spend my vacation there on a boat – like last year,” concluded the Bolzano native.
