Tania Cagnotto European champion for the 13th time

Cagnotto had already shown her class in the qualification in the morning and won it confidently. In the final she remained a few points below her qualifying record (292,90 points), but in the end no one could challenge her for the title. The woman from Bolzano took the lead right from the start and didn't relinquish it until the end, even though she missed the fourth jump.

Cagnotto, who was almost ten points ahead of the entire competition after the third jump, ultimately won with a razor-thin lead of 0,75 points over the Russian Kristina Ilinykh, who was thus crowned vice-European champion. Third place went to the German Tina Punzel (286,70 points). Meanwhile, Cagnotto's colleague, Maria Marconi, had to make do with a thankless fourth place.

Cagnotto, the woman of records

With the gold medal from the 1m board, the 29-year-old South Tyrolean has increased her haul of precious metals at the European Championships to 20 times. This is an absolute record that the woman from Bolzano has set in this regard. Cagnotto also won gold on the 1m board in Turin in 2009 and 2011, in Budapest in 2010 and in Rostock last year.

I jumped much better in the qualification than in the final. The mistake on the fourth jump could have even cost me the gold medal. I was annoyed and knew I had to end my series with an excellent jump to keep the competition at bay. I succeeded and in the end the gold medal counts,” Cagnotto is quoted as saying on the Italian Swimming Federation’s website.

Cagnotto's next appearance will be on Saturday in the synchronized diving on the 3 m board, which she will compete together with Francesca Dallapè.

Dell'Uomo/Verzotto in fifth place In addition to the 29-year-old, Maicol Verzotto was also in action in Berlin today. Together with Francesco Dell'Uomo he competed in synchronized jumping from the tower. With five participating teams, the two “Azzurri” took fifth place.

However, Maicol Verzotto traveled to Berlin in ailing state. He injured his thumb and then his wrist at the World Cup in Shanghai. He was actually supposed to take a break for two months.

The gold medal went to the German duo Patrick HAusding/Sascha Klein. The Belarusians Vadim Kaptur/Yauheni and the Ukrainians Oleksandr Bondar/Maksym Dolgov completed the podium.
