Tania Cagnotto European champion for the eleventh time

Tania Cagnotto once again remained unmatched by her competitors from the Old Continent. The 28-year-old from Bolzano won her first “golden” at these European Championships in Rostock, but already her eleventh European title overall.

Cagnotto had already shown her class in the qualification in the morning and won it confidently. In the final she was the only one able to surpass the 300 point mark (301,20) and took almost 27 points off second place Bazhina. The young Maria Polyakova took bronze with 273,90 points. Bazhina and Polyakova are both from Russia.

Cagnotto, the woman of records

With the gold medal from the 1m board, she increased her haul of precious metals at European Championships to 17 times. This is an absolute record that the woman from Bolzano has set in this regard. Cagnotto also won gold on the 1m board in 2009 and 2011 in Turin and 2010 in Budapest. Last year, Giorgio Cagnotto's daughter had to settle for silver.

“I trained very little in 2013. Winning a European Championship medal is always a great joy and satisfaction. I concentrated on myself and tried to get a little ahead. I was able to open up a gap between myself and my competitors, which ultimately became larger. Everything went very well for me, I’m happy,” said Tania Cagnotto at the edge of the pool.

Marconi is disappointed The Roman ultimately had to settle for sixth place, even though she was in the lead in the early stages of the final. However, Marconi “messed up” the third attempt and fell behind. It's a shame, because otherwise there would have been two medals for Italy's female divers. But Tania Cagnotto remains Europe's queen.
