Bode Miller deals against ski stars

The American, who resigned in 2017, gives the new generation of skiers a bad report. “The World Cup hasn’t evolved in a long time,” said Miller. He misses guys like Hermann Maier and complains that the new generation lacks creativity.

“Let’s take the last race I ran in Kitzbühel: the day before I finished the training run with a lead of 2,7 seconds. But then in the evening everyone watched my run on the video - and the next day they all rode this line,” said the 41-year-old. “It's no longer the case that people drive a completely different line or that someone drives much more aggressively or does something differently. Creativity is simply completely lacking today.”

“Everyone wants to make a show out of everything right now, but that’s not the idea of the World Cup.” Bode Miller Miller names Hermann Maier and Luc Alphand as positive counterexamples. “The boys back then pushed each other and were constantly looking for ways to beat the others. They tinkered in all areas and really wanted to be faster than the other drivers. Today everyone just keeps doing the same thing and hopes that they are fast enough in the end.”

The current development annoys Miller. “Everyone wants to make a show out of everything, but that's not the idea of the World Cup.” Miller is particularly sad about the fact that Alpine combined may no longer have a future. “Alpine combination is the most original form of skiing. I think it's a shame it's going away, but there aren't any good all-rounders left at the moment. Either you have good downhill skiers or you have good slalom skiers.”

Last but not least, Miller predicts a bleak future for skiing: “The World Cup has not developed any further in recent years. Maybe soon it won’t exist anymore.”
