“Scored own goal”: FIS race director Waldner reprimands critics

Snow, wind, fog – the World Cup downhill on Saturday took place under adverse conditions. This didn't go down well with all skiers . The Austrian Otmar Striedinger spoke of an “insolence”, the Swiss Beat Feuz described the descent as “unworthy of the World Cup”, Dominik Paris called the conditions “not fair” and Christof Innerhofer was anything but enthusiastic (“Why they went through with it, I don't know").

“Not a dream concert” FIS race director Markus Waldner did not miss the harsh criticism from the runners. In a detailed interview with “Laola1.at” counters the South Tyrolean: “I understand the emotional reaction at the finish. Those who were excited expected a medal, but came away empty-handed. But it’s not a dream concert, it’s an outdoor sport.”

The conditions were difficult, Waldner also knows that: “It was at the limit, maybe even a little over the limit at times, but it wasn’t dangerous – otherwise I would have stopped the race immediately.” And further: “A few runners simply had it Fed up because they couldn't ride the line they came up with in training. They’re all here to win medals.”

Waldner would have liked more respect for the double victory of the Norwegians and especially Aksel Lund Svindal. “He drives with one haxn' - he can't even perform with the other one - and almost wins the race, even though he had the same bad conditions. It was Aksel's day, his farewell, and he was not given the respect he deserved. He is a true sportsman, a gentleman. Everyone who complained scored an own goal and made themselves unpleasant.”
