World Cup expert panel: Patrick Thaler tips the men's slalom

The Sarner took part in a total of five world championships (2007 in Åre, 2009 in Val d'Isere, 2013 in Schladming, 2015 in Vail/Beaver Creek and 2017 in St. Moritz). In 2009 he came seventh in the slalom. During the last season, the now 40-year-old ended his career as a skier.

Patrick Thaler about… … favorites and secret favorites in the men’s slalom: “The absolute top favorite is Marcel Hirscher. Behind them are Clement Noel, Henrik Kristoffersen and the Swiss Ramon Zenhäuser and Daniel Yule.”

… the chances of the South Tyroleans: “You have outside chances. Manfred Mölgg has good part-time jobs, you should never write him off completely. Alex Vinatzer drives really fast, but at 19 years old this World Cup comes a little too early for him, but I like to be surprised.”

… his best World Cup experience: “It's nice that the slalom is usually the last race of the World Cup. There's a great atmosphere there. Except for Val d'Isere, I was always eliminated, there aren't many good memories there (laughs)."

… his strangest World Cup experience: “Åre 2007 was my first World Cup, I jumped on the World Cup bandwagon at the last moment. I was eliminated in the slalom, but had very good part-time times. In any case, I sent my racing skis home in the delivery truck after the first run. Then suddenly it was said that I should start in the team competition and I found myself without skis. It was a real thunderstorm and my service man managed to bring the racing skis back to Åre after a journey of several hours. But the team competition was nothing.”

… the secret recipe for a World Cup race: “Simply skiing fast, it’s exactly the same as always. The goals are also red and blue…it’s just something that’s talked about and written about more.”

… his winning tip: “I would like to say something different, but there is only one tip: Marcel Hirscher.”
