Birkeland & Co: Top-class field of participants in Ridnaun

For the first time, an IBU Cup stage will be broadcast via live stream by the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) and Rai Südtirol.

In addition to many young athletes, there are also some World Cup-proven biathletes among the 334 registered participants from 42 different nations. For example, the Norwegians have Lars Helge Birkeland (relay world champion 2019 in Östersund, Olympic silver in the relay 2018 in Pyeongchang) or the German team Maren Hammerschmidt – world champion with the relay 2017 in Hochfilzen – registered, while Alexia Runggaldier (St. Christina) – World Cup -Bronze in the individual 2017 in Hochfilzen – the Italian national team strengthened. The Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) has also nominated Michela Carrara, Irene Lardschneider (Wolkenstein), Eleonora Fauner, Patrick Braunhofer (Ridnaun), Saverio Zini, Thierry Chenal, Mattia Nicase, Paolo Rodigari and Rudy Zini for the South Tyrolean biathlon event.

Already on Tuesday, a large number of athletes took advantage of the optimal training conditions that currently exist in Ridnaun. We practiced hard both on the cross-country ski trail and at the shooting range. Wednesday is dedicated to official training before the first winners are announced on Thursday, December 12th. And that in a very young discipline, namely the Super Sprint. Here, the participating ski hunters first go through a qualification in which three laps of 1 km each have to be completed. After the first round you shoot lying down and after the second round you shoot standing. Athletes have access to one reloader for each shooting session. If one or more discs remain still, the 75 meter long penalty loop continues.

The best 30 biathletes qualify for the final, which will be held in the afternoon from 15 p.m. and will start simultaneously depending on the qualification result. Five laps of 1 km each are run here. The biathletes go to the shooting range four times: the first two times while lying down, the last two times while standing. As in the qualification race, one reloading cartridge is available for each shooting session; the penalty loop is also 75 m long.

Sprint on Saturday, mass start 60 on Sunday There will be another day of training on Friday before the competition program continues with a traditional sprint on Saturday. The IBU Cup in Ridnaun ends on Sunday with a mass start 60. In this competition, instead of 30, 60 biathletes can now take to the track together. The participants complete six laps of running. The first 30 ski hunters go to the shooting range after the first round, the remaining 30 after the second. From the third round onwards, the second shooting session follows for all athletes; the sequence at the shooting range corresponds to that of a pursuit competition.
