In the end it wasn't enough for the “Azzurre”. For a long time they were in the top trio with Sweden and Russia, but the strong German and Norwegian final runners made a lot of time on the cross-country ski trail and finally overtook fourth Azzurre Federica Sanfilippo. Gold went to Sweden, while Russia took silver ahead of Germany. The top favorites from Norway narrowly missed the podium. Italy finished in a strong 5th place.

Lisa Vittozzi from Italy started the race. This time she remained confident at the shooting range and only needed one reloader for both shootings. With just 1,5 seconds behind, Vittozzi handed over to Dorothea Wierer, 10 seconds ahead of Bulgaria, France and Norway.

The racer was able to excel again in the first shooting and remained flawless. Sweden and Germany remained close on Wierer's heels and were only 1 seconds behind the South Tyrolean. Wierer remained flawless again in her second shooting and confirmed her top form at the shooting range. However, the 4-year-old was not able to fully impress on the cross-country ski trail and handed over to Samuela Comola, 2 seconds behind Russia. At the second change, the French and Norwegians were already in 31th and 10th place, 2 minutes and 1.46 minutes behind Russia. Things looked good for a long time The 23-year-old Comola also caught all the targets in the first shooting and kept Italy on track for a medal for the time being, even though the competitors still had strong runners waiting at the end. At the second shooting, Comola came to the shooting range at the same time as Svetlana Mironova from Russia and Hanna Öberg from Sweden. While Mironova had to go into the penalty loop once, Comola and Öberg got through with a spare and the top trio of Sweden, Italy and Russia ran together towards the third change. Germany, however, remained in fourth place, 2 seconds behind, while France and Norway made up time and were 3 minutes behind the leaders.

Comola handed over to Federica Sanfilippo from Ridnaun with 7,4 seconds on Russia. She had to run against the strong Elvira Öberg from Sweden and Ulina Nigmatullina from Russia. However, Denise Herrmann from Germany and of course the outstanding Marte Olsbu Røiseland from Norway stalked up from behind. After the 7th shooting, things continued to look good, so Sanfilippo made no mistakes and went back into the trail in 3rd place. The lead over Germany was 10 seconds. Sweden remained on course for gold with a lead of 26 seconds over Russia. Even in the standing position, Öberg showed no nerves and only needed one spare; she ran comfortably towards the gold medal with a lead of 24 seconds over Nigmatullina. Sanfilippo only needed one spare while standing, but was gradually overtaken on the cross-country ski trail by the much faster competitors.

While Sanfilippo fell back to 5th place, Røiseland chased Denise Herrmann in the fight for the bronze medal. But in the end it was just not enough for Norway. Gold went to Sweden, silver to Russia and bronze to Norway. Federica Sanfilippo finished in 5th place, a solid performance from the Italian relay team.
