Wierer, of all people, makes a mistake: the relay narrowly misses the podium

The extremely strong Lisa Vittozzi, Federica Sanfilippo and Michela Carrara brought Italy close to the podium in the last women's competition before the World Championships in Pokljuka. Together they only made four missed shots - exactly as many as Wierer alone in her two final shooting units. A jump onto the podium was therefore no longer possible, but with a good performance on the cross-country ski trail, Wierer secured fourth place for the Azzurre and thus their best result of the season.

Vittozzi and Sanfilippo laid the foundation for a strong performance. Starting runner Vittozzi handed over to Sanfilippo in first place with a whopping 16,5 seconds lead. The woman from Ridnaun was unable to defend her lead, but she kept Italy in the front field after two spare rounds. Then came the supposedly weakest Azzurra, Carrara, who was only 23 years old, but she showed the most impressive performance of all four starters that afternoon. She kept her nerve at the shooting range, only had to reload once and handed over to Wierer in fifth place after a strong performance on the cross-country ski trail.

Carrara sent Italy's star biathlete onto the track 18 seconds behind the podium. Wierer was unable to overcome this on her two laps. Although she missed the target by two shots in both the prone and standing positions, she was still able to lead Italy to fourth place. Russia intercepts Germany At the front, the biathletes from Germany and Russia claimed victory among themselves. From the second change onwards, these two nations fought a thrilling head-to-head race, in which Germany's final runner Franziska Preuß initially had the lead, but was then intercepted by Uliana Kaisheva. This secured Russia's women's relay their first win of the season.

The podium was completed by the French women, whose final runner, Julia Simon, crossed the finish line 19,3 seconds ahead of Wierer. The result in detail:

Almost exactly four years ago to the day, Dorothea Wierer sensationally led Italy's women's relay team onto the podium at the end of the World Cup week in Antholz. Such a surprise was within reach today too, but this time Wierer, of all people, showed nerves.
