Geez! Wierer gives away Antholz victory in the last shooting

The 27-year-old from Rasen, who had taken second place in the pursuit just ahead of Domracheva the day before, made no mistakes in the first three shooting sessions. She hit one target after the next at a hellish pace and made lonely circles on the trail. But at the last standing attempt she missed twice. The dream of the first Italian women's victory in Antholz was shattered. While the South Tyrolean had to go into the penalty loop, Domracheva and Anastasiya Kuzmina passed. In the last few kilometers, the completely exhausted Wierer lost even more positions and ended up crossing the finish line in seventh place. After all, she also finished in the top ten in the third Antholz race this year.

The winner was quickly identified at the front of the field: Domracheva, who was in eighth place until the last shooting, didn't let Kuzmina get close and finally reached the finish with a lead of almost twelve seconds. The 31-year-old from Minsk was happy about her second win of the season. Kuzmina, for her part, defended second place in a duel with Kaisa Mäkäräinen, who had four missed shots but recorded the absolute best time on the course. The overall World Cup leader from Finland completed the podium in third place. The Norwegian Marte Olsbu and the winner from the previous day, Laura Dahlmeier, took fourth and fifth place.

The two “Azzurre” Lisa Vittozzi and Nicole Gontier missed out on a top placement. After three missed shots each, they ranked 16th and 18th respectively.

The Belarusian Darya Domracheva confidently won the mass start race at the World Cup in the South Tyrol Arena and at the same time the last women's competition before the Winter Games in South Korea. For a long time it looked as if local hero Dorothea Wierer would come out on top in the end.
