“Azzurri” relay takes third place – Olympic champions France top

The azure relay team made an exclamation mark with the three South Tyroleans Dominik Windisch, Lukas Hofer and Dorothea Wierer as well as Lisa Vittozzi (Pieve di Cadore) on Sunday afternoon. At the mixed relay competition in Pokljuka, Slovenia, the “Azzurri” took a strong 3rd place behind the victorious French and Switzerland with one penalty and eight shooting errors.

Starting runner Lisa Vittozzi gave the “Azzurri” the lead right from the start. The 23-year-old made no mistakes in the prone shooting. She also showed a strong performance on the cross-country ski trail, but was overtaken by Slovakian Paulina Fialkowa. Vittozzi came to the shooting range in second place. She also performed flawlessly in standing shooting and remained error-free. With a lead of 2 seconds over the Frenchwoman Anais Bescond, she returned to the trail as the leader. There the “Azzurra” fell back to third place and handed over to Dorothea Wierer in a promising position behind Finland and France.

Wierer was able to hold on to the front, but the 28-year-old had to reload twice in the prone shooting due to two errors. Wierer made no mistakes in the standing shooting. This meant that the “Azzurra” stayed right at the front and handed over to Dominik Windisch in second place, 2 seconds behind the Finn Kaisa Makarainen.

3 missed shots from Windisch While things were going well for Windisch on the cross-country ski trail, the “Azzurro” made a mistake in the prone shooting and had to go into the penalty loop due to three missed shots. During the subsequent standing shooting, Windisch had to reload twice. In 3th place, 5:1.20 minutes behind the leading Frenchman Martin Fourcade, Windisch handed over to final runner Lukas Hofer. At this point, 3rd place was around 36 seconds away.

Hofer started a furious comeback, remained clean in the prone shooting and passed the Russian Alexander Loginow and the Finn Olli Hiidensalo. At the front, the Frenchman Simon Desthieux moved away, while Jeremy Finello took second place and rushed towards the first ever Swiss mixed relay podium place.

With just one spare shot, Hofer was able to retain third place after the standing stage and confidently achieved a podium finish for the “Azzurri” relay team.

“Azzurri” relay takes third place – Olympic champions France top

The Olympic relay team did it again: As at the games in South Korea, the azure mixed relay team took third place at the Biathlon World Cup in Pokljuka.
