At the Giro d'Italia: Wierer inspires cycling fans

Not on the bike, but on her roller skis, Wierer passed the finish line in the stage town of Piancavallo ahead of the Giro entourage. The distance covered was only a very short one, there was no sense of timing or competitive feeling at all; rather, it seemed to be one of those PR appearances that the exceptional biathlete, who is very effective in advertising, does in a row during the time when she is not racing. And yet: the cycling fans were thrilled. They applauded her on the finish line, pulling out their cell phones to capture the moment. Later Wierer said in Rai -Interview that she has been fascinated by cycling “for a long time” and received appreciative looks from the panel of experts in the TV studio. What sounds like a marketing ploy was actually meant seriously in this case. The 2-time Antholz world champion sits in the saddle for hours and hours during preparation for the season, completes countless kilometers on cycle paths and climbs legendary passes such as the Stelvio Pass or the Mortirolo, even among cyclists. “The bike is an important training tool for biathletes” Dorothea Wierer Wierer acted as patron on Sunday for the 15th stage, which ended with the mountain finish in the small winter sports resort north of Pordenone. It attracted a similar number of looks as last year during the section to Antholz, when Wierer also paid a visit to the Giro. “I always think it's great to be on the track as a fan,” says the racer, who also sees another purpose in cycling: “For us biathletes, the bike is a very important training tool. There are important parallels between the sports.” After the television interview, Wierer went back to signing autographs on Sunday in Piancavallo. While the Giro celebrates its star guests like Wierer and Carolina Kostner, who made her appearance in the first week of the race, there is a lot of fear behind the scenes. On today's rest day, all participants will undergo another series of tests. If the coronavirus has spread measurably on the stages on the Adriatic and through the Dolomites, it is unlikely to continue on Tuesday in Udine. Instead there is a threat of demolition.

Of course, overall leader Joao Almeida and day's winner Tao Geoghegan Hart were the most sought-after people to talk to on Sunday at the finish area in Piancavallo. But a biathlete stole the show from many other cycling stars on the 15th stage of the Tour of Italy, namely Dorothea Wierer.
