Special wedding: German biathlete marries new biathlete

It is no longer uncommon for an athlete from the cross-country skiing circuit to switch to biathlon. Antonia Fräbel decided to take this step after last winter. The 25-year-old German took part in world championships, the Olympic Games and World Cups as a cross-country skier, and now she wants to prove herself to the ski hunters. There she also meets Philipp Horn, who won bronze with the German biathlon relay team in 2020 in Antholz - and who has been Fräbel's partner for what feels like an eternity. Last weekend the two took the next step.

Horn and Fräbel got married. True to the motto “Biathlete says yes to new biathlete”, it was a wedding that was attended by many sports celebrities. Olympic champion Katharina Hennig stopped by from the cross-country skiing camp, and Benedikt Doll and Erik Lesser were invited guests from the biathletes. The celebration took place in a 4-star hotel in Illmenau in the Thuringian Forest. Suddenly everything is new So everything is new with Antonia Fräbel: the sport, the family status – and also the name. Because if you're looking for her on the biathlon start lists next winter, you'll have to look for the name Antonia Horn. The 25-year-old has taken her husband's last name and wants to cause a sensation with it. And being a biathlete has another bonus: it significantly increases the chances that she will see her lover Philipp more often in the future. As is well known, men and women complete the stages in the World Cup circus at the same time and in the same place.

By the way, there are a few examples of cross-country skiers being able to be successful in biathlon. Denise Herrmann (now Olympic champion), Kati Wilhelm (now multiple Olympic champion, overall World Cup winner and multiple world champion) and Magdalena Forsberg (the most successful biathlete of all time with 42 World Cup victories) began their careers in cross-country skiing. But the jump to the much more popular ski hunters is not an easy one, as the example of Stina Nilsson shows: The Swede has won a lot among cross-country skiers, but is still looking for the right recipe for success after switching to biathlon last summer.
