The best biathletes in the world arrived in Antholz

On Wednesday the women train from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the men from 13.15:15.15 p.m. to XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. They are all working on their form with a view to the six World Cup races that will be held in the South Tyrolean biathlon stronghold.

South Tyroleans want to be on the podium

Ten “Azzurri” were among the athletes who hit the trails for the first time on Tuesday. In the men's category, the two South Tyroleans Lukas Hofer and Dominik Windisch as well as Thomas Bormolini, Giuseppe Montello and Thierry Chenal were nominated. The women's team, however, is made up of local heroes Dorothea Wierer, Federica Sanfilippo and Alexia Runggaldier, who is returning to the World Cup, as well as Lisa Vittozzi and Nicole Gontier.

The local athletes are starting with ambitious goals, as they have already made it to the podium seven times this season. Dorothea Wierer won the individual race in Ruhpolding, took second place in the Oberhof pursuit and third place in the Hochfilzen sprint. Lisa Vitozzi also came third in the pursuit of Le Grand Bornand. There are also second places in the relays in Ruhpolding (women), Oberhof (men) and Ostersund (mixed).

A podium finish should now also be achieved in Antholz, where the “Azzurri” have so far had 16 top-three finishes. With Lukas Hofer (3), Renè Cattarinussi (2014), Pieralberto Carrara (1999) and Johann Passler (1993), four athletes from the host country in the Antholz Valley stood on the winner's podium. These past successes should serve as an incentive for the current World Cup athletes. “Things are going really well at the moment, I’ve already made it into the top 1988 in a total of six World Cup races. Hopefully a podium will now appear. Of course it would be nice to be here in front of my fans,” said Lukas Hofer after the first training session.

The anticipation is rising

The unique atmosphere that prevails in the South Tyrol Arena year after year guarantees a further boost of motivation. It will push the athletes forward in the upcoming six races. “We have sold a lot of tickets in advance, the weekend is practically sold out and the media interest is also huge,” says OK boss Lorenz Leitgeb.

It starts on Thursday with the women's 7,5 km sprint, and the next day the men compete in the 10 km. Finally, the eagerly awaited pursuit and mass start races are scheduled for the weekend.

Two days before the first World Cup decision, the South Tyrol Arena in Antholz is gradually coming to life. Over 300 athletes from 34 nations will take part in the 6th stage of this year's Biathlon World Cup from Thursday to Sunday. The first training session took place on Tuesday in light snowfall.
